Hugh took up photography seriously in 2007 when he was asked to join Pete Gilbert’s A Year in the New Forest project. His contribution was a collection of 48 black and white photos. The project was exhibited at Salisbury Gallery and Hangar Farm Arts Centre in 2008. The last exhibition was held at Lyndhurst Gallery in 2009.

He was a runner up in the ‘Iconic’ Images of the New Forest National Park Picture 2009 photography competition and runner up in the 2010 ArtCare Open Exhibition Salisbury.

Current projects include The Lymington River – Source to Solent  (with New Forest artist Pete Gilbert and his photographer son Zak Gilbert between university studies); the Jurassic Coast (with Pete Gilbert and watercolourist and photographer Steve Yeo); Ponds, Puddles and Paths (with Pete Gilbert).

Hugh is also a cartoonist. He is always looking for the humorous potential in everyday events. At times taking a cynical attitude to authority, people’s behaviour in public and family life in all levels of society. In the long distant past he provided cartoons for the Cyprus Mail in the mid 50s and The Gibraltar Chronicle in the late 70s. He illustrated Bryan Philpott’s The Real Aviation Enthusiast in 1987 and Peter March’s The Real Aviation Enthusiast II in 1995.

He lives in Downton with his wife Nan. Their three talented children grew up and ran away years ago. He supplements his pension by stealing his own money from his National Savings book.
